Ethan Mosure participates in State Level Geography Bee!

On April 4th, 2014 100 children from across the state came to Albany New York to compete in The National Geographic Geography Bee. They were vying for the chance to go to the National Competition in Washington, D.C. 5 groups of 20 students were sequestered in different rooms around the NYS Museum with a moderator and score keeper.  Students grades 4-8 participated in an eight round competition.  Upon completion moderators met to determine the top scoring students in each of the five groups.  Unfortunately, our Marcellus student received 6 out of 8, removing him from the final phase.

Sixteen children scored a perfect 8 out of 8 and were then placed on stage in an auditorium.  This elimination round was necessary because the last phase allowed for only 10 contestants.  After 6 out of the 16 were eliminated the final round began. In the end the champion, a two time winner, and 8th grader from Upstate, moved on to Washington, D.C.

Ethan left with a t-shirt and certificate of participation, as well as the knowledge that he was part of an elite group of children with knowledge of their world that rivals that of many adults.

Way to go Ethan!

Feed My Starving Children

7th and 8th grade students participated in a service learning activity at the beginning of April.  On two separate days, we boarded buses to head to The Vineyard Church to participate in filling food bags for the Feed My Starving Children organization. Feed My Starving Children meals have been distributed in nearly 70 countries through missionary partnerships at orphanages, schools, clinics, schools, refuge camps and malnourishment centers. Our students packed 12,060 meal bags which filled 335 boxes to be shipped.  Each meal bag contains 6 meals.  That means we created 71,946 meals! That is remarkable!  Students were amazing and had a great day.  We made the difference in the lives of many children!
