Mrs. Carey's 5th grade class remembers Veteran's Day

Each year Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11. It's a day set aside to

honor and pay tribute to all of America's past and current veterans for their service to

our country and the numerous sacrifices they've made and continue to make.

Student’s in my class had to interview a veteran of the armed services; whether

it was a family member, friend of the family, etc. They then had to write a report and

create some sort of visual aid to show what they had learned.

The most important thing my students learned was that it was more than just

another day off from school.

First Quarter Honor Roll and High Honor Roll

Congratulations to all our students who made the Honor Roll and High Honor Roll for the first marking period!  Way to go!  Keep up the good work!!  Students were recognized at class assemblies during the school day.

Congratulations to our First Quarter Breakfast Recipients

On Friday the 14th of November students in grades 4-6 were recognized for their Effort or Citizenship for the first marking period.  Students and their parents were invited to join us for a celebration and breakfast.  We also recognized our Science Citizens for science lab. This has been a long standing tradition here at DMS sponsored by our PTA.  Thank you Mrs. Morocco and Mrs. White for pulling it all together for the students, parents and DMS staff.  It is an awesome occasion!   Congratulations to all the recipients!

DMS Annual Spelling Bee Results!

Congratulations to all our students who participated in our annual spelling bee sponsored by Scripps.  This year we had 17 students qualify to participate in the Oral Spelldown after taking the written round on the 10th of November.  Our participants were: Nate Sonnacchio, Ryan Moses, Matt Green, Brooke Speath, George West, Noah Brown, Sebastine LaVine, Aubrey Fraher, Deanna Gannon, Connor Reagan, Kade DeMarle, Jeffry Shi, Colin Arnett, Jim Manard, Carley Frajda and Amy Francesconi,  We had one 4th grade, one 5th grade, eleven 6th graders, two 7th graders and one 8th grader compete.  After 11 rounds of spelling our DMS Champion was declared!  Congratulations Sebastian LaVine for becoming the 2014-2014 School Champion.  Second place finisher was Brooke Speath.  Brooke and Sebastian will move on in the Bee.  The next step will be a written test taken Regional at OCC.  The top 25 in that round move on to the televised bee at WCNY studios.  We wish Sebastian and Brooke good luck in the next round!

Marcellus alumnus donates astronaut book to DMS Media Center

Amber native and 1983 Marcellus graduate David Seymour returned to his alma mater for the first time in more than three decades on Nov. 20, to donate copies of “Spacewalker,” a book penned by his friend and John F. Kennedy Space Center colleague, retired astronaut Jerry L. Ross.

“I haven’t been back in 30 years,” Mr. Seymour said as he looked around the bookshelf-lined walls of the C.S. Driver Middle School library. “I miss this place.”

Mr. Seymour now lives in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and works as an assistant director of operations and astronaut rescue team leader for NASA. During the space shuttle program, which ended after Atlantis’ final mission in 2011, he was among those who manned emergency landing sites in Morocco, Gambia and the south of France, in case something went awry during a shuttle launch. He’s now helping to draft rescue procedures for Orion, the space program’s newest craft designed to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before. He said Orion will have its first unmanned test flight Dec. 4, to try out its heat shields, parachutes and other critical safety equipment.

He said he hopes plenty of Marcellus students will take the time to read “Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA’s Record-Setting Frequent Flyer” and maybe even consider a career with the space program. Mr. Seymour delivered two copies of the book, one to the DMS library and one to Marcellus High School.

The author is a veteran of seven U.S. Space Shuttle missions.

Mustang Pride Walk/Run

Getting ready for a 1.5 mile walk or 5k run! It is a little chilly with the wind but it is not snowing so that is good. Thanks to all our participants! National Junior Honor Society sponsored the event and did a great job of planning and putting it all together.  They made over $500.00 to donate to Feed my Starving Children. Thanks for coming out on a chilly Sunday!
