Curriculum Night Grades 7 and 8

Thank you to all the parents who attended our Curriculum Night for students in grades 7 and 8 on Thursday, September 26th.  We had great attendance!  We started the evening with some general welcoming and informational comments about how our school year has started.  We emphasized our themes for the year are:  "Safe and Comfortable Environment" and "At DMS we are Dedicated and Motivated to Succeed".  Teachers talked about their content area and expectations as well as covered some topics that are pertinent to all:  Schooltool utilization, Testing/reteaching and pacing, Tips to help your child succeed, and Extra-Curricular Eligibility. Your children have gotten off to a great start and we are very excited about the year!  Please remember to COMMUNICATE with us.  We want to work together to foster a partnership and work toward the success of your child.  Remember to sign up for School News Notifier! Curriculum Night Grades 4-6

DMS celebrated a successful curriculum night!  Parents were presented with information regarding the start of the school year, our DMS themes for the year, activities students have done to help teach each other about our expectations, reminders about the Dignity Act and anti-bullying initiatives, and ways to communicate with school personnel and get information about what is happening in school.  Parents then had an opportunity to learn more about the curriculum and expectations teachers have for the students.  The PTA sponsored our annual book fair and had many visitors. Thank you to all the parents who attended it was a great night!

Students Off to a Great Start!

We had a great first week of school!  Students seem to be settling in, finding their way and learning the routine. Modified sports is up and running with a full contingent of participants.  7th and 8th grade students should tune in over the next two weeks to be aware of all the clubs that will be starting up. Running club for students in grades 4-6 starts on Monday.

We spent the first week revisiting our expectations and general procedures.  8th graders spent time in assembly collaborating with their peers and creating posters about what it means to be a leader.  The 7th graders also created posters with a focus on our "No-Bullying at DMS" initiative.  We hope to get these posters up on the walls as reminders to all our students about being good leaders and about how to help stop bullying in our school.  The students in grades 4-6 collaborated to design a short presentation which would be used to teach the rest of the student body about our expectations.  Each grade level was given a set of topics: classroom/cafeteria expectations, bus expectations, tips for success in school and anti-bullying messages.  Additionally, each grade was asked to create a presentation to give examples of how we can address our DMS theme this year, which is: "Dedicated and Motivated to Succeed!"  Students worked in their classrooms on these projects during the week and then we all came together on Friday in assembly to share our work. The students did an awesome job! The students taught others about our expectations, how to succeed in school, how to address bullying behavior and how to be dedicated and motivated to succeed!  We still have a few presentations to do but there is no doubt that all our students will be excellent role models for each other given the messages they presented on Friday.  

Speaking of role models, I have charged all students in our school to be a leader and a role model this year. Middle school is a great place to test your leadership abilities.  I hope that all students take advantage of opportunities to be a leader this year!

This week is another busy week.  We have our DMS PTA Book Fair all day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Curriculum Night for parents of students in grades 4-6 will be on Thursday, September 12th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the DMS auditorium.  We look forward to seeing you!
