6th Grade Students Run a City!

Students spent the day at the WCNY studios in Syracuse at the Enterprise America Education Center. After approximately 6 weeks of preparation it was time to run a city.  Students selected jobs and responsibilities they wanted to hold.  These jobs included being the Mayor and law enforcement. Students could work in various businesses that make up the city: cafe, technology, entertainment, automotive, sporting goods, banking, manufacturing, utilities, post office, and various other shops. Each shop had employment positions such as: owner, accountant, production manager, and sales representative.  Students had to determine the product they would sell, make their product, advertise and hopefully make money!  They earned money while they worked their job and were then able to spend their money at the various shops. In this simulated city children learn dozens of businesses and civic concepts, and explore careers.  Generally speaking, they are learning a little about what it is like to be in the workforce! The program connects the learning students are doing in school to the real world and why it is important to learn math, reading, writing, public speaking, financial literacy, team work, critical thinking and citizenship. Students worked very hard throughout the day!  It was very impressive.  Nice work students!

They made toiletry cases.  These were wash clothes that they sewed pockets into and filled with shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, deodorant. The 7th grade students made over 100 toiletry cases! The cases will be donated to Long Point Camp and the Samaritan Center.
